Immediately after its release in September of 2015, this simplistic-looking game managed to attract universal acclaim from both worldwide media and gamers who praised its originality, depth of content, metaphysical and thematic material, combat gameplay systems, and other elements such as story, characters, music and more.Īt the end of 2015, the Undertale game was even included in many publications list for the best game of the year. Final Score: 9.Undertale is an award-winning role-playing game, developed and released by an indie developer Toby Fox. What I can’t talk about here is what you need to experience for yourself, which is basically everything else.

The combat is fun and challenging, and while it’s not my favorite, it gets the job done. The story is well-crafted, introspective, and one of the most memorable I have ever played. These characters immediately grab your attention never let go. The seamless blend of multiple themes into single songs, the sweeping synths and hilarious oddities, Toby Fox has absolutely nailed the world-building music that still tears across the internet to this day. First off, the soundtrack is sheer perfection in this game. This is a 2D “bullet-hell” RPG created by one talented individual, Toby Fox. Boy, did I have absolutely no idea what I was getting into. Free of Spoilers! I bought this game after hearing some of the murmurs of its success back in 2015, and I took a chance and picked it up. I bought this game after hearing some of the murmurs of its success back in 2015, and I took a chance and picked it up. Most of the negative information about the games comes players expecting Earthbound and getting something more punishing like Mario+Luigi defending actions if it were a danmaku (bullethell) game. Negatives: Some jokes waste too much time to get to the punchline, the game also hasn't learned from some of the most hated mechanics that have been abandoned in newer games (eg invisible random battles, long cutscenes that can't be skipped, and "dead end"'s caused by early mistakes.) That said the negatives are small enough to not make players want to quit the game. Most of the game can be played in a single play-through, with additional endings available after completing the game once. Most of the difficulty in the game comes from intentionally wanting to have a bad time with it.

Pros: The game content is mostly balanced.

Many of the people who love Undertale will find it tickles their nostalgia bone just as much geek culture. As such it enjoys plenty of free publicity from the likes many of the top gamer Youtube channels like Game Grumps and Markiplier.
